Sunday, we got coffee & then searched for the bus that would take us to Hillsong Church. It took about an hour wandering around the southern part of the city to find the bus stop. We sat there for 45 minutes only to find it was the wrong stop. Finally, thanks to the help of some nice Canadians, we made it to Hillsong. It was totally worth all the hassle. The music, message, & atmosphere were awesome.
After church we went back to Darling Harbour & took the ferry to Circular Quay. The ferry ride gave us a completely different view of the city. It was one of my favorite parts of the trip. We met a very nice Australian on the boat who gave us directions (of course) & other sightseeing tips. We walked around Circular Quay, the Sydney Opera House, & the Royal Botanic Gardens. We walked all along the water at the gardens—we even saw an authentic Scottish wedding with bagpipes & kilts! We decided to do a late dinner at Darling Harbour. It was nice to sit outside by the water (today was like 30 degrees cooler than yesterday). Jet lag hit again & we ended up walking back to Kent Street by 11.
Australia Day!
We finally slept in today—hopefully we are adjusting to the time difference. We checked out of our room (thank God) & locked up our luggage in the hostel’s basement. You should see us trying to get around… probably comical if you aren’t us. We headed straight for George Street & ended up exploring an Australian grocery store. There are some similar foods, but all the packaging is different. We took the breakfast food we bought to the Hilton—we needed somewhere to sit & some plastic spoons. So we snuck in, stole some utensils, & sat on one of their couches. They never noticed.
We went down to Circular Quay to enjoy all the Australia Day festivities. It was packed. Everywhere you looked there was live music… even floating stages in the water. There were hundreds of boats, ferries, & yachts cruising about the bay. We decided to sit at a restaurant overlooking the Quay/Opera House & have a brew. Mobs asked if the Stella was a light beer & the bar tender laughed & said, “That’s the beer that men drink & then go home & beat their wives…” YIKES. So we went with the Cascade Light. Next thing we know, a group of 20-somethings, dressed in Australian flags & tattoos, asks if we want a picture. They were funny & we ended up talking with them for a while. Next thing we knew, it was time to walk back to X Base & grab the shuttle to the airport. Cheers, Sydney!
