Mobs & I were welcomed into Airlie beach by a flood. Once we sloshed our luggage out & around the Greyhound, a Scottish guy with a Mohawk shuffled us into his silver van (he worked for our accommodation). We stayed at the Bush Village up the road from the town of Airlie Beach. It’s a cute little place with about 20 little cottages. Mobs & I shared one with a couple from Denmark—shared a kitchen & bathroom. They were really nice, even though we barely understood what they were talking about. Once checked into our car, the Scottish guy drove us into town. We walked around in the rain, sat at the point & stared out into the ocean, went into “Peter Pan” to make some bookings… Then we stumbled into a didgeridoo lesson. Didgeridoos are the traditional instruments played by the Aboriginal people. We had so much fun, but we were terrible! We kept wandering around the town (waiting for the $10 special to start at a local pub—steak, fries, & salad), but we found a fun, cheap place: Mamma’s Boys. We got a cheap meal & a pitcher of beer while we listened to the live music. It was basically a man & a guitar. He played some Neil Young (DAD: couldn’t stop thinking about you all night!) Mobs & I are constantly on the search for free stuff & cheap food…
HAPPY EASTER! Mobs & I woke early for free brekky & some chocolate eggs. The Scottish driver & his girlfriend were busy serving cereal & making muffins. He wouldn’t stop talking about his muffin making skills the night before. After brekky, the Maxi Ragamuffin bus picked us up (along with 30 others) & took us to Shute Harbor. There we boarded the Ragamuffin & set sail for Whitehaven Beach. The trip out was amazing. The water here is turquoise/light blue. It’s insane. There were multiple times when the Ragamuffin was tipped like 90 degrees from the surface of the water—just flying through the open seas. Once we reached Whitehaven, we took the dingy in, had a picnic lunch with the crew/passengers & laid out in the sun. The sand on Whitehaven Beach is pure white & so fine that it squeaks underneath your feet. It was an AMAZING way to spend Easter. You can’t swim in the water up here because of the deadly stingers (jelly fish), so Mobs & I had to suit up in the stinger suits before we could go for a dip. We’re living on the edge here. On the 2-hour trip back, Mobs & I became best friends with the crew: Angela, Pricilla, Kim, & our skipper, George. George is hilarious—but his quiet murmur speech & Aussie accent constantly confused us. Kim was loving us because she’s friends with our innkeeper: Greg. She got George to give us the wheel for a bit. It was so fun. When we kept saying, “See you tomorrow!” We’re booked 2 days on the Ragamuffin. Towards the end, Angela served everyone a cheese & sausage plate. It was amazing. Before spending the evening in Airlie Beach, we talked with Greg. He was showing us all his fish pictures & giving us messages for Kim. The BV is fun because it’s so small & you get to know the employees really well.
