Milford Sound

The next morning we woke to Steven whipping up some cheese/ham croissants. Steven & Cameron decided to call in sick & drive with us to Milford Sound. MS is an AMAZING fjord with massive mountains, waterfalls, & glaciers surrounding it (see pics). It is extremely remote & takes 4 hours to get there. Once we hit Te Anua, we stopped for a coffee & continued the rest of the 2 hours to MS. When we finally got to MS, Cameron realized he left his wallet at one of the lookouts, so we boarded on a boat to take the 2 hour cruise around the fjord & he jumped into the silver bullet to look for his wallet. We were practically driving on fumes on the way there, so Cam had to stop at some backcountry gas station to get emergency fuel. He said it was the creepiest thing ever & that the lady was pumping the fuel by hand. Anyway, after the AMAZING cruise, which opened up to the ocean (if we kept going, we would end up in Australia!) & took us by some cute seals basking, we met Cam on the shore. Mobs drove us back through the windy roads/mountain tunnels until the car stopped. We ran out of gas in the pitch black on some turn 3o minutes from town. SO we hitch hiked with Steven. Some snowboard instructor picked us up in his wagon & dropped us at the nearest petro station. Everyone we talked to was like, “You’ll never get a ride back out. There is nothing out that way. The next car wont be leaving until about 8 am tomorrow.” Cameron didn’t have a phone or wallet, so we had no idea what to do at this stage… until we saw a group of Canadians who were on our boat at Milford Sound. Luckily, there was this girl who was super keen to take us back to the car. It was an ADVENTURE for sure. Once we started driving back to civilization, I noticed no one even screwed on the lid & closed the cap. Just great. Anyway, we made it to a pizzeria in Te Anua, got a full tank, & then coasted home—stopping to watch the stars, of course.
